Chinese Ministry of Education, & Universities,

invite BKSTS Accreditation Advice & Contributions to their HE Work

Our Accreditation Co-ordinator, Mark Trompeteler, was recently invited by the QAA, the national UK body responsible for the standards in degree education within the UK, to join a distinguished panel of UK academics. The panel drafted the national subject benchmark statements for many of the degrees in our industry areas. These national guidelines were published and distributed to all UK universities in late 2016.

Mark was also recently invited to meet with a delegation of high ranking colleagues from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a number Chancellors and Vice Chancellors from Chinese universities to talk to them about BKSTS Accreditation. The Chinese government is about to embark on a major national review and development of vocational degrees, starting initially with those degrees aimed at their hospitality and catering and moving image industries. As a representative of IMIS, on their recent visit to the UK, Mark was invited to consult with them.

International
Student Widescreen Film of the Year Competition - 2016


BKSTS and the Film Team at National Media Museum co-operated again for a third year to provide a competition and prestigious showcase opportunity for student and graduate film makers who are fully exploiting wonderful widescreen aesthetics and production values. From a staggering 510 entries from young film makers and film schools around the world the overall winner came from The National Film School at Lodz in Poland. "The Undersigned", is a powerful film which fully exploits widescreen cinematography, aesthetics and production values in a visually stunning way. It also used sound to great effect. The prize for for the “Best use of Widescreen and Technical Excellence from a BKSTS Accredited Institution" went to film maker Matthew Jeffrey from Staffordshire University for his film "Henry". The event at the National Media Museum on the 13th. October was hosted by Mark Trompeteler with Professor Sir Christopher Frayling giving a brief review of the short listed films and presenting certificates on stage. Each winner was able to undertake a A “Demo-Day” for 2 – 3 students from the wining team, at the Red Cameras Facility, at the world famous Pinewood Studios, when the winners are able to get a practical glimpse at the latest high end digital motion picture and other cameras from Red, as guests of Red.

Another Great Annual Accreditation Event: Wednesday 6th. July 2016

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Christie once again, and the kind support of the BFI Technical Operations Team, our annual event for accredited and approved courses was held at NFT 3 at BFI Southbank, London, again.

Martin Uren gave a fascinating talk on filming for VR, and an overview of basic visual grammar for VR. There was a great on stage interview with Annie Conlon about her experience of breaking into the TV industry and navigating a career in that competitive industry. A Q & A session with students followed. Courses were able to showcase recent graduation work in this great venue. All this with drinks and networking afterwards made for another great event.

January 2016: - The first ever BKSTS ChEFF (£1000) Award

to a Graduate of a BKSTS Accredited Broadcast Engineering Course

Thanks to a bequest from the former ChEFF - the Chief Engineers of Facilities Forum, BKSTS has recently introduced a new award of £1000 for the most innovative broadcast engineering course project from a broadcast / image / media engineering course accredited by BKSTS. Roland Brown, President of BKSTS, and former Director of Engineering at the Moving Picture Company visited the four broadcast engineering courses in summer 2015 as students graduated. The winning project "Android Hybrid Radio Protoype" was celebrated with the award of a £1000 cash prize that was presented to Lee Hulse from Ravensbourne who graduated in 2015 with a 1st class BSc (Hons) in Broadcast Systems Technology. The bequest will facilitate a further four such wards in the next four years.

Students - that on this occasion were principally from Greenwich University, their tutors, and other BKSTS members were rewarded with a highly informative evening at one of the BKSTS meetings held in the Autumn of 2015. Marcus Dryden, from the Moving Picture company gave us a detailed insight into how he developed his career - now working as a visual effects supervisor. The evening was rich in detail and useful information and Marcus also answered the numerous questions that students and others raised. As always drinks and refreshments made it a great evening at the Medi-Cinema near London Bridge.

A shortlist of 10 short films, chosen from the 65 entries received this year, for the “BKSTS/NMM Student Widescreen Film of the Year”, was screened at the National Media Museum – the second year that BKSTS & NMM had run this competition. Following on from a presentation by double Academy Award winner, Paul Franklin, and with another Oscar winner, Douglas Trumbull, in the international audience, and following on from a 70mm presentation of “Interstellar”, there was absolutely no pressure on the student work or the students present in the audience. The students’ films looked very good on the big screen and audience members, including cinema legend Douglas Trumbull, spoke to the students afterwards, - all commented on the very high quality of the short student widescreen films. The winners were “Maya” ( Dir: Bhimsen Lama Prod: Tom Cullingham ) from Ravensbourne College, and Deep Pan Fury ( Dir: Charles Dennis Prod: Ismail Guluev ) from UCA, Farnham Film School. Both film makers won cameras from Black Magic Design.


2015 Reps Meeting at Pinewood Studios

Student reps from accredited and approved courses used all kinds of travel routes to visit us at the world famous Pinewood Studios for a another meeting with members of the Society's Education and Training Group. Afterwards the team at Sony's Pinewood Centre, Matt, Richard & Pablo, chatted with students about 4K workflow and basic approaches to post production using Raw and the emerging trends in motion picture capture. The team at Sony kindly provided a great sandwich lunch and soft drinks in their hospitality area. Students were able to inspect some great Sony Digital Motion Picture Cameras set up on their training set. Again students from different courses from across the country were able to meet up and chat with one another.


"Hot Topics & Work in Progress" 2014 Event at NFT2

Sponsored by Christie, in late June, over sixty students and staff from accredited and approved courses attended the afternoon Workshop / Conference with presentations from industry professionals on current Hot Topics within the industry.
Eugenie von Tunzelmann, from Framestore, joined us hot from the wrap party of Chris Nolan's latest film "Interstellar" to talk about carving out a career as a computer special effects supervisor and how to get there.
Angela Gordon, a member of BKSTS Council, spoke about winning shorts commissions, promoting & marketing shorts and shorts as an industry career start.
Peter Wilson, a well known Fellow of the BKSTS, spoke about the role of the Digital Image Technician and particularly what knowledge base DITs need to know and understand to become employable and effective.

The afternoon presentations were interspersed with short presentations from each of the accredited / approved courses showing clips of student work and highlighting production issues back at campus.


2014 BKSTS / NMM Student Widescreen Film of the Year Event at Bradford

In a first co-operation between BKSTS and the Bradford International Film Festival team at NMM the BKSTS / National Media Museum Student Widescreen Film of the Year 2014 competition was held earlier this year. Entries were invited from courses within the BKSTS Accreditation Scheme and a shortlist of six films was screened to an international film festival audience on the afternoon of Friday 11^th. April. The overall winner was “Howl” and a winner’s certificate was presented to Claire Barwell, the course leader from UCA Farnham Film School, by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling with Mark Trompeteler, the BKSTS Accreditation Scheme Co-ordinator, introducing the event. A certificate of commendation was presented to Dan Hopkins, the course leader from Staffordshire University, for the film “Secret Shelters” for its superb use of widescreen framing, composition and widescreen aesthetics.

Students mixed with influential industry professionals at the BKSTS 2014 Bernard Happé Awards Event held at The London Film Museum on London's South Bank. Keynote speaker for the evening was Mark Foligno, Chairman and producer MoliFilm, who was executive producer for the film "The Kings Speech". Other industry professionals attending the evening included Stuart Penn from the Framestore team behind the Academy Award winning film "Gravity", Floella Benjamin, Anita Harris, Sir Sydney Samuelson, Ian Dunleavy, CEO The Pinewood Studios Group, Richard Salmon lead research engineer at the BBC and many others.

Farnham Film School's Re-Accreditation Marks a 25 Year Association with BKSTS

Claire Barwell, course leader for the well known BA(Hons) Film Production Course at the UCA Farnham campus, was presented with their accreditation certificate by Baroness Floella Benjamin at this year's BKSTS Awards Ceremony at The London Film Museum on London's South Bank. Their recent re-accreditation marks a twenty five year association with BKSTS.

Student reps from accredited and approved courses travelled to the famous Groucho Club, right in the middle of Soho's post production neighbourhood, for a meeting with members of the Society's Education and Training Group. Afterwards BKSTS sponsor and supporter, MPC, hosted a "backstage tour" of their company's facilities in nearby Wardour Street. Students reps met the head of recruitment and met and chatted with employees of MPC to learn more about the everyday work of a major international post and effects company. MPC kindly provided some liquid refreshment in their hospitality area when students from different courses from across the country we able to chat with one another.

Students on courses accredited or associated with the BKSTS, once again had the opportunity of recently screening their work at the National Film Theatre on London’s South Bank. Representatives at the show included ones from Brighton Film School, Greenwich, Sheffield Hallam and Staffordshire Universities, as well as from University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham, and Ravensbourne.

BKSTS Arranges Film Festival Screening for Farnham Graduate Film "Pantheon"

At the Widescreen Weekend strand of the 2013 Bradford International Film Festival BKSTS was able to provide an opportunity for the screening of a widescreen short film “Pantheon”, a recent graduation film from the well respected and BKSTS Accredited BA (Hons) in Film Production Course at the University for Creative Arts, from their Farnham campus film school, directed by Frederick Lloyd. This beautifully realised and executed short film made by students, was in one or two places reminiscent of a Ridley Scott film, but made successfully on a miniscule student budget. The film was extremely well received at the film festival by an international audience that included film industry professionals from Los Angeles.

A March 2013 Accreditation Visit resulted in the four degree courses in Broadcast Engineering at Ravensbourne College being awarded full BKSTS Accreditation status for the next five years. The accreditation panel were also able to see first hand, and in some detail, the sate of the art facilities installed in this relatively newly built HEI, built right by the O2 Arena on the North Greenwich Peninsula in London.

Keynote speaker for the evening was Nik Powell, who has been the Director of the National Film and Television School since 2005 whilst he still remains non-executive chairman of Scala Productions and holds a number of other key posts within influential British and European film and media industry bodies.

After a long association between Brighton Film School and the BKSTS - the One Year Diploma in Cinematography & Directing was the first ever course to Gain BKSTS Approved Course status in the new BKSTS Course Approval Scheme.

GAINS RE - ACCREDITATION

John Holden, David Wheeler and students from Staffordshire University celebrated their long standing relationship with the BKSTS when they were presented with their accreditation certificate by Society President Roland Brown recently. Commenting on their undergraduate BA(Hons) programmes in Media (Film) Production, Experimental Film Production and Advertising and Commercial Film Production the BKSTS report concluded " that there was a really positive, industrious, creative and professional “atmosphere” associated with these courses, with evidence that students work hard collectively to produce work of a high standard. ", with evidence that students work hard collectively to produce work of a high standard.

GREENWICH UNIVERSITY COURSES GAIN ACCREDITATION

The first post graduate programme to gain BKSTS accreditation was recognised recently when Professor Christopher Woollard was presented with an accreditation certificate for Greenwich University by society patron Sir Sydney Samuelson at NFT3, BFI Southbank. The MA / MSc. in Cinematography and Post Production together with the BSc in Digital Film Production and the BSc Film and Television Production (BBC) were awarded accreditation following visits earlier in the year.

Students on courses accredited or associated with the BKSTS, a film industry professional body, had the opportunity of recently screening their work at the National Film Theatre on London’s South Bank. Representatives at the show included ones from Brighton Film School, Greenwich, Sheffield Hallam and Staffordshire Universities, as well as from University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham, and Ravensbourne. Students showcased their work to an invited audience which included Sir Sydney Samuelson CBE, patron of the BKSTS, who started work as a rewind boy in the projection room of his local cinema and went on to found one of the leading companies that supplied the British and European film industries for many years, and worked on all the major David Lean films. He was a founding member and then a subsequent chair of BAFTA for a number of years. Students were delighted that a veteran stalwart of the British film industry attended their event. Roland Brown, President of the BKSTS, and former Director of Engineering at one of the world’s leading post production and special effects companies, based in London, MPC, was also in attendance. At the end of the screening Sir Sydney and Roland Brown presented staff from Greenwich and Staffordshire Universities with Certificates of Accreditation for courses at their institutions. Mark Trompeteler, organiser of this yearly screening, commented that “the standard of work produced by students graduating from BKSTS accredited courses this year was particularly outstanding”. The screening was sponsored by Christie, the major international manufacturer of digital cinema projectors, and was made possible thanks to the close support of the BFI Technical Operations Team.
